Notes from the landowner

Wolf Pen offers rifle deer hunting during Kentucky's November modern gun season on 35 private acres near Tyner, Kentucky, in Jackson County and Kentucky Deer Zone 3.

Gun season falls right in the November rut, when bucks are on their feet in daylight looking for does. Wolf Pen's steep hardwood ridges and thick interior timber are the kind of cover eastern Kentucky deer lean on once pressure builds, and the ridge lines, edges, and hollows give you natural travel routes to watch. Kentucky has a national reputation for big whitetails, and Zone 3 rules let each gun hunter take one buck and one antlerless deer with a firearm.

One party of up to two hunters has the property at a time, so nobody else pushes your ridge. The property is walk-in only: park at the designated parking area off the easement road and hunt on foot, which keeps disturbance low while deer are moving. Camping is welcome as well. Bring a drag or pack frame, since deer come out on foot over steep ground.

You will need a Kentucky hunting license and a statewide deer permit, both sold over the counter with no draw. Hunter orange is required on the head, back, and chest during gun season. Tyner has groceries and gas, and McKee has food and lodging

This is a Buck + Doe Hunt.

Game and habitat information

Mixed hardwood ridges and steep hollows make up Wolf Pen, the kind of eastern Kentucky timber where whitetails feel secure. In November, bucks cruise ridge lines, edges, and hollows between bedding cover in the thicker interior timber and the does they are searching for, and cold mornings keep deer moving. With most of the leaves down by gun season, visibility opens up through the hardwoods, and a hunter posted where travel routes pinch together can cover a lot of ground.
