Notes from the landowner

Faith and Furrow offers private duck and goose hunting on 900 acres of winter wheat and summer fallow just east of East Helena in Lewis and Clark County, Montana. Set in the Pacific Flyway, these fields are where waterfowl come to feed when birds are working the Helena Valley, giving field hunters a front-row seat to the morning flight.
Waterfowl licenses are sold over the counter, so you can book and hunt without waiting on a draw.
Field hunting is the game here. Green winter wheat and wide-open fallow give birds an easy, inviting place to land, and a well-placed decoy spread can pull flocks in close. With open country all around, you can watch birds lift off nearby water and track exactly where they are headed, then set up on the feed and let them come to you.
Your party of up to four hunters has the property to itself. Only one hunt is booked on Faith and Furrow at a time, so the birds are yours to work. Bring portable or layout blinds and your decoys, and drive a direct route from the road to your setup area to unload and pick up. Everything comes back out at the end of each day.
This is a 1-day shotgun hunt, with the season running from early October into January. Every hunter needs Montana waterfowl licenses, a Federal Duck Stamp, and HIP registration. Helena is about 10 miles west for hotels, restaurants, and supplies

Game and habitat information

As fall turns to winter, ducks and geese push into the Helena Valley and lean on agricultural fields to fuel up between nearby lakes and reservoirs. Winter wheat stays green late into the season, which makes it a magnet for geese, and ducks will join them in the fields as the weather turns cold. Summer fallow gives birds open landing zones with clear sight lines, so concealment matters. Keep your blinds low and brushed in, and set your spread with the wind at the birds’ faces. The best hunts usually come on cold mornings and after a weather system pushes new birds down from the north.
