Notes from the landowner

Dale Branch Creek offers doe hunting on 20 private acres just south of Scooba, Mississippi, in Kemper County and the Hills Deer Management Unit.

This is a freezer hunt on ground that holds a lot of deer. The uplands are pine, the better soils grow oak and hickory, and Dale Branch Creek cuts through the middle with timber stretching out on every side. Does travel the creek between the thick pines and the mast trees, which gives you an easy spot to set up and wait.

You’ll have the place to yourself, with only one hunter or party booked at a time. Park at the landowner’s gate and walk the trail in. There are no dogs on this property. Bring your own portable stand or blind, and pack it out at the end of your hunt.

This two-day hunt runs during Mississippi’s antlerless primitive weapon season, so bring your muzzleloader. Only antlerless deer can be taken, and Mississippi allows up to five a season on private land. Licenses are over the counter through MDWFP at mdwfp.com. You can stay at the motel in Scooba or head to Meridian for more choices.

Game and habitat information

This property sits in the southern mixed oak-pine forest of east Mississippi. Loblolly and shortleaf pine cover the higher ground and give deer thick bedding and security cover, while oaks and hickories grow on the richer soils. Dale Branch Creek ties it all together, giving deer a natural route to travel between cover and food. When the hardwoods drop acorns and hickory nuts in the fall, deer key in on that mast. Focus your setups where the pine uplands meet the hardwood creek bottom, and on trails that parallel or cross the creek. Deer numbers are high across this area, and the surrounding timber means animals are moving onto and through the property throughout the season.

Harvest Reports

After your hunt, you will be sent an automated Harvest Report. To assist Infinite Outdoors in maintaining the quality of properties - and continue to put conservation at the forefront - we require that the harvest report be completely filled out and returned. Failure to fill out the harvest report within 2 weeks of the hunt taking place will result in a $25 fine. If you are unsuccessful in filling your tag, Infinite Outdoors still needs to have that information provided to them. This is how we will make changes to future year's harvest quotas and continue to be the most well managed access and conservation platform in the country.
