Notes from the landowner

Johnson Canyon is a 40-acre private mule deer camp in Natrona County, Wyoming, set in Deer Hunt Area 89 west of Casper and south of US 20-26. The property borders about 2,000 acres of state trust land and several BLM tracts, so your hunt starts at your tent and keeps going well past the fence line. Mule deer are the main draw, with whitetails present in smaller numbers.

This is classic central Wyoming deer country: rolling sagebrush hills cut by draws and broken up by rocky outcrops, sitting between roughly 6,200 and 6,500 feet. Deer bed in the outcrops and draws through the day, which makes glassing from the high ground the play. Bring good optics and be ready to cover ground on foot.

Wyoming does not allow overnight camping, off-road driving, or open fires on state land, and public access in Area 89 is hard to come by. Johnson Canyon solves both problems with a legal private camp right on the edge of the state ground. Tents are welcome, and trailers are allowed when weather and road conditions cooperate.

One party of up to four hunters books the property at a time, and each adventure runs 5 days. Every hunter needs a valid Wyoming deer license for Area 89. The road in is a rough two-track and weather decides what can make it, so plan on a high-clearance 4x4. Casper, about 25 miles east, has lodging, groceries, and fuel.

Game and habitat information

Johnson Canyon sits in open sagebrush country of rolling hills, draws, and rocky outcrops with no timber. Mule deer use the outcrops and draws for daytime bedding and security cover, then move out onto the sage and grass to feed early and late. Whitetails are found in smaller numbers. Area 89 is a big, mixed-ownership unit where glassing long distances and hiking between vantage points pays off, and the adjoining state and BLM ground gives you room to work that pattern.

Payment Policy

Reservation fees are due at the time of booking and are non-refundable. 50% of the outdoorsman fee will process 2 weeks after the Wyoming draw results are posted. If you are unsuccessful in the draw, reach out to IO and the situation will be handled accordingly. The remaining 50% will process 1 month prior to the hunt.

Cancellation Policy

For big game adventures, cancellations made prior to placing a deposit will be handled immediately with no penalty. If a cancellation is requested after a deposit has been placed, Infinite Outdoors will make every effort to reschedule the hunt for a different season or a future year. Refunds are not guaranteed once a deposit has been placed.

Property Availability

If there is a lapse in availability, please do not be discouraged to reach out to IO. All calendars are set and managed by landowners, and unavailability is set by them. However, IO is willing to reach out on your behalf, to check on available dates. Other reasons for unavailable dates include biologist recommended hunter/harvest quotas that landowners implement, as well as state season dates not being released.

Tresspassing

You are not legally allowed to access the property, for any adventure, prior to your selected access day. If you try to access the property at all before your selected date(s), without prior approval from IO, you will be subject to trespassing and punishments therein

Draw Odds

Deer Hunt Area 89 is limited quota, so every hunter needs to draw a Wyoming deer license valid in Area 89 before booking. Draw odds change every year. View current drawing odds, licenses, and leftover availability in the Wyoming Game and Fish Hunt Planner: https://wgfd.wyo.gov/HuntPlanner

License and Application

Wyoming deer and antelope licenses are sold through the Wyoming Game and Fish Department draw. Apply, check leftover licenses, and buy preference points at wgfd.wyo.gov.

Current Season

Wyoming offers a special archery season in September and a rifle season in the second half of October for antlered deer in Area 89, with whitetail rifle seasons running into late November. Season dates change every year; check current dates and regulations at wgfd.wyo.gov before your hunt

State Land

The ground next to this property includes Wyoming state trust land and BLM land. Legally accessible state trust land is open to public hunting with a valid license, but Wyoming prohibits overnight camping, open fires, and off-road driving on state land, and vehicles must stay on established roads. Your camp stays on the private 40. Know where the private, state, and BLM lines are before you hunt, and use the Infinite Outdoors app or another land-status map to stay legal.

Harvest Reports

After your hunt, you will be sent an automated Harvest Report. To assist Infinite Outdoors in maintaining the quality of properties, and to continue to put conservation at the forefront, we require that the harvest report be completely filled out and returned. Failure to fill out the harvest report within 2 weeks of the hunt taking place will result in a $25 fine. If you are unsuccessful in filling your tag, Infinite Outdoors still needs to have that information provided to them. This is how we will make changes to future years' harvest quotas and continue to be the most well managed access and conservation platform in the country.
