Notes from the landowner

Sandhills Pronghorn Ranch is a 5,500+ acre property located in Colorado’s pronghorn Unit 101 north of Cope, Colorado, offering a true DIY antelope hunting opportunity in the rolling sandhills and open prairie of eastern Colorado. Lodging is not included and camping is not permitted on the property, with the nearest accommodations available in towns such as Akron, Yuma, or Wray, roughly 40 miles to the northeast. Colorado manages this unit under a very limited buck tag quota, with only 10 pronghorn buck tags issued statewide for this unit each year. Most hunters can typically draw a buck license with approximately 5–7 preference points, making it a competitive but attainable draw for those building points. Landowner vouchers may occasionally be available for an additional fee paid directly to the landowner, though they are expected to be rare since landowners themselves must often accumulate up to 17 preference points to draw tags in this unit. For hunters interested, archery pronghorn licenses in this unit are available over the counter, making early-season archery hunts an accessible option for those looking to experience the property without navigating the rifle draw system. The ranch features established two-track roads that provide access throughout much of the property; however, due to the sandy soils common to this region, 4WD vehicles are strongly recommended. All vehicle travel must remain on existing tracks, and off-road travel or creating new trails is strictly prohibited. There may be cattle present on the ranch during September, particularly during archery season. Their presence will not impact your ability to hunt, but hunters should be mindful when navigating the property, leave all gates as you found them, and always be certain of your target.

Game and habitat information

Colorado’s Unit 101 is known for producing solid mature pronghorn bucks, though it is not managed as a high-density unit. Mature bucks commonly fall in the mid-teens range, with occasional larger animals appearing each season, particularly on private ground where hunting pressure is limited. The landscape here is primarily pronghorn country, and the open prairie and sandhill terrain lend themselves well to traditional spot-and-stalk antelope hunting. The sandhill prairie transitions into areas of dryland agriculture and nearby irrigated crop circles, which help hold antelope in the area. These outside food sources provide consistent forage during late summer and early fall, often drawing pronghorn out of the native prairie to feed during morning and evening movement periods. The combination of native range, available water, and nearby agriculture supports a healthy antelope population within Unit 101. Water on the ranch is available through several stock tanks located across the property, which provide dependable water sources for wildlife in this dry prairie environment.
