Notes from the landowner

Tarryall Ranch Reservoir is a hidden waterfowl paradise in the heart of South Park Valley, just outside Como, Colorado. Only 1.5 hours from Denver and 45 minutes from Breckenridge, this property offers an easy day trip with a truly wild feel. Nestled along a productive section of of the valley with riparian areas all around, this private 35-acre reservoir and surrounding wetlands sit directly in a major flyway, drawing strong migrations of ducks and geese throughout the fall.

The combination of open water, shoreline, and nearby agricultural fields creates prime conditions for waterfowl. Early in the season, you can expect mixed bags of ducks staging on the reservoir. As winter sets in, the open water becomes a magnet for big flocks of mallards and Canada geese looking for a safe roost.

Whether you prefer decoying birds from a shoreline blind or hunting field edges where birds feed in the morning, Tarryall Ranch Reservoir offers multiple setups for different wind and weather conditions. Access is straightforward, with parking near the water and short walks to prime hunting spots.

Game and habitat information

Tarryall Ranch Reservoir offers a rare mix of high-country waterfowl habitat and consistent late-season opportunity thanks to active water management. This 35-acre private reservoir sits in South Park Valley along the Tarryall Creek corridor, a prime migration route for ducks and geese moving through the central Rockies.

Early in the season, hunters can expect fast-paced teal flights mixed with gadwall, wigeon, and mallards staging on the open water. As fall progresses, the surrounding agricultural fields and wet meadows draw in flocks of mallards and Canada geese, with occasional pintail and diver duck sightings.

One of the key features of this property is its network of aerators that keep sections of the lake ice-free even in sub-zero temperatures. This open water acts as a magnet during the late season when most other stillwater in the region is frozen over, concentrating large numbers of mallards and geese for dependable hunting action.

The shoreline provides a bit of limited natural concealment with low brush, while nearby dry land pasture and grain stubble offer critical feeding areas. With roost, loafing, and feeding sites all within close range, Tarryall Ranch Reservoir provides everything migrating birds need, keeping them in the area and within range of hunters from the September teal opener through the final weeks of the split.
