Notes from the landowner

This property is one of 12 that are a part of the Oregon Trail Waterfowl Pass. Hunting here is limited to Oregon Trail Waterfowl Pass Holders and their guests - inquire within IO if you'd like more information about the pass. Hilltop Pivot Goose Pit sits on a raised alfalfa field just east of Torrington, within less than a mile of the North Platte River and a network of roost ponds. Because of its elevation and clear sightlines, Hilltop often catches geese flying out of the river or loafing ponds in slow morning light or returning in the evening. The 4-man goose pit is positioned right on the field edge to maximize visibility and minimize disturbance to the crop. Driving into the alfalfa fields is strictly prohibited and will result in fines. All gear, blinds, and decoys must be carried in on foot from the access points provided.

Game and habitat information

This alfalfa field lies tucked between the North Platte River and a chain of ponds and loafing basins - a region well documented as a key corridor for migrating Canada geese. According to recent WGFD mid-winter surveys, Goshen County has hosted nearly 15,000 Canada geese during counts, often representing about half of all Canada geese counted in the county in those surveys. While mallard numbers have fluctuated and are lower in recent years, geese remain relatively strong users of this region. Local reports also confirm that while drought in breeding grounds has lowered some numbers, the fields and water sources in and around Torrington continue to draw geese regularly. Because of the proximity of roost sites (river and ponds) and the alignment of fields in their flight paths, hunters in these fields can expect consistent flight activity, especially in early mornings and late afternoons. Weather-driven shifts (cold fronts, snow, wind) tend to concentrate goose movement - hunters anticipate roost shifts and set decent decoy spreads with good concealment generally see higher success. Overall, these fields are among the more reliable goose hunting opportunities in southeast Wyoming for those willing to walk in, work edge setups, and time their hunts well.
