Notes from the landowner

Eaton Ranch is a 920-acre DIY mule deer and whitetail rifle hunting property near Dupree, South Dakota, in Ziebach County and West River deer Unit 64A.

The ranch sits at about 2,400 feet, where rolling prairie gives way to a web of draws, creek bottoms, and buttes. Spend the morning picking apart the draws from a high point, then make a move on a buck you like. Deer water at the ranch's 2-acre lake and a second water source, so they stay put through the season.

Your group of one or two hunters has exclusive use of all 920 acres for 5 days. Sit a blind on a draw crossing or still-hunt the breaks; both work here. Two-track roads let you get a truck to your deer.

Come for the November West River rifle season, when rutting bucks cruise the draws in daylight. Mule deer bucks must score 160" or less and whitetail bucks 140" or less. A Unit 64A deer license from SD Game, Fish and Parks is required, and the unit posted a 65% success rate in 2025.

Game and habitat information

Mule deer are the predominant species, with whitetails sharing the same draws and creek bottoms. Mule deer bed in the breaks around the buttes, and the draws and creek bottoms hold deer during the day and connect bedding areas to feed and water.

Hunting the high ground and glassing the draws is the most productive approach here, along with checking the 2-acre lake and second water feature at first and last light. One party on 920 acres means the deer stay in their natural patterns for the length of your hunt.

License and Application

Unit: West River Deer Unit 64A (Ziebach County). License: Type 01, one Any Deer. Current allocation: 250 resident and 20 nonresident licenses ($45 resident, $375 nonresident).

Draw odds: In the 2025 draw, 314 residents listed Unit 64A Any Deer as their first choice for 250 licenses, and 67 nonresidents applied first choice for 20 licenses. That works out to enough licenses for roughly 4 of every 5 resident first-choice applicants and about 1 of every 3 nonresident first-choice applicants. Preference points improve your odds.

Hunter success: Hunters holding a Unit 64A Any Deer license had a 65% success rate in 2025, well above the 49% average across all West River units, and the reported buck harvest was split evenly between whitetails and mule deer (source: SD GFP 2025 West River Firearm Deer Harvest Report).

How to get a license: Unit 64A licenses are awarded through the SD GFP combined deer draw. Any licenses left after the draws are sold first come, first served until the season closes. You must hold a valid Unit 64A license to book this hunt.

Purchase licenses at gfp.sd.gov or through Go Outdoors South Dakota.
This hunt is for mule deer bucks scoring 160" or less and whitetail bucks scoring 140" or less.

Current Season

This hunt is available during the South Dakota West River rifle deer season in November. Season dates are set each year by SD Game, Fish and Parks.
Check current season dates and regulations at gfp.sd.gov before your hunt.

Harvest Reports

After your hunt, you will be sent an automated Harvest Report. To assist Infinite Outdoors in maintaining the quality of properties, and to continue to put conservation at the forefront, we require that the harvest report be completely filled out and returned. Failure to fill out the harvest report within 2 weeks of the hunt taking place will result in a $25 fine. If you are unsuccessful in filling your tag, Infinite Outdoors still needs to have that information provided to them. This is how we make changes to future years' harvest quotas and continue to be the most well managed access and conservation platform in the country.
