Brook Trout, Brown Trout, Rainbow TroutBattle Creek is a remote gem tucked into the Western Slope of Colorado’s Continental Divide, approximately 1.5 hours north of Steamboat Springs. Access requires travel on well-maintained dirt roads through national forest adding to the feeling of true solitude. Upon arrival, anglers are rewarded with sweeping, uninterrupted views and five full miles of private river access.
River access points vary from gentle walk-ins to occasional steep banks, but overall, reaching the water is straightforward for most anglers. The property allows for dispersed camping, making it a great option for multi-day trips into a wild and scenic part of Colorado few get to experience. Bring everything you need, and come prepared to spend some time—you won’t want to leave.
This stretch of Battle Creek is an angler’s dream, offering an incredible variety of water types over nearly five miles. Whether you're stalking cutbanks, drifting through long runs, picking apart pocket water, or probing deep pools, this property feels like a "greatest hits" of trout habitat. It's the kind of place where each bend reveals a new opportunity and no two sections feel quite the same.
Anglers will encounter a mix of trout species ranging from 8" to 16", with the potential for larger fish lurking in deeper holding water. A versatile setup is key, come equipped with at least an 8'6" 4-weight, though many will prefer a 9' 5- or 6-weight for better line control and streamer work.
This is true Western freestone fishing in a remote alpine setting. With low pressure, a variety of fish-holding structure, and miles of river to explore, Battle Creek offers a backcountry experience that rivals any destination in Colorado.

5 out of 5 stars
Absolutely Beautiful free flowing mountain stream in Wyoming I fished the lower section in the morning plenty of fish in the pools and along banks all rainbows 6" to 10" The ranch is easily accessed and you can park and walk short distance to river I fished for over 8 hours and maybe covered 1/2 of the available area and landed fish at each stop. The camping areas marked on the map looked great for an overnight trip I only made it to the 4 out of 5 Camping/parking spots the 5th was across a meadow that was a little to muddy for me. I managed to land 4 Bows over 18 hiding in deep pools in the upper section. Caught most fish on dropper set up (Stimulator or Chubby with a Perdigon Nymph) well over 20 fish day I will be back to do some camping and great small stream fishing
