57Experience 1.5 miles of pristine fishing along the Middle Fork of the South Platte River, conveniently situated just 3 miles outside the charming town of Fairplay, Colorado. Colorado Parks and Wildlife biologists have reported that the Middle Fork boasts “more trout biomass per mile of stream than any other river in Colorado.”
Here, you’ll encounter a classic trout stream nestled within the heart of a Freestone River environment. As a Freestone River, it is subject to fluctuations due to run-off conditions and low flows. The prime fishing season typically spans from late spring through early fall, with peak opportunities emerging during the summer months when water levels stabilize, and insect activity thrives. You can expect to catch Brook trout, Brown trout, and Rainbow trout. Common flies used in this area include dry flies, nymphs, and streamers, with patterns like caddisflies, stoneflies, and midges being popular choices. You have the opportunity to catch many fish on this section of the river in the range from 6 - 12" but this is not where you will be catching the trophy fish. This is a property to have a fun day hanging with the smaller guys. It’s essential to check with local fly shops or guides for the most up-to-date recommendations.
Access to the property is convenient and accommodates easy walk-and-wade fishing. The river’s bed features an array of stones, varying in size from 3″ to 6″, with occasional larger stones. It winds gracefully through the property, offering anglers a diverse array of fishing spots, including pools, riffles, cut banks, and lengthy runs. Casting should present minimal challenges, as the property is largely devoid of obstructions, with only a few scattered trees or willows, primarily in the upper section. Additionally, the river is easy to cross in most places depending on the flows.
Although we typically get your booking approved within a few hours, please allow up to 1 business day for booking confirmations.
The property is considered a high mountain property, please be prepared for rapid weather changes throughout the year. The property is surrounded by high peaks and snow-capped mountains. You can expect to see elk throughout the year. There is little to no fencing on the property.

Fishing was very good. Fish 10-14 inches, mostly Rainbows and some Browns. Lost as many as I put in the net. Hopper dropper until about 11-11:30 then started getting them eating drys.

This was a great option for the crowded holiday weekend. The fish are fun-sized and its a great property to throw hopper droppers or dries.
