WaterfowlHickman Dam East, located near Langford, South Dakota, is a prime stopover for migrating waterfowl in the Prairie Pothole Region. The property combines agriculture fields, wetlands, and brushy cover, offering an excellent mix of feeding and loafing habitat. Birds use the wetlands for rest while moving back and forth between the crop fields and nearby larger water bodies, creating consistent shooting opportunities throughout the season.
The wetlands and marsh edges attract strong numbers of ducks early in the season, while geese become more prevalent later as temperatures drop and crop harvests increase. The long treeline and shelterbelts also provide natural concealment and flight corridors, making this property well-suited for layout blinds, A-frames, or traditional water sets.
With easy access and a mix of open fields and water, Hickman Dam East delivers the classic South Dakota waterfowl hunting experience, high bird numbers, varied opportunities, and plenty of space to set up for different winds and conditions. Whether targeting ducks in the ponds or geese in the cut fields, hunters will find reliable action and memorable hunts season after season.
Hickman Dam East offers a diverse mix of crop fields, wetlands, and shelterbelts that create excellent habitat for migrating ducks and geese. Several ponds and low-lying wetlands scattered across the property reliably hold ducks throughout the season, serving as natural loafing and roosting areas. These ponds attract strong numbers of mallards and other puddle ducks early in the fall, while field-feeding geese become more common later in the season as crops are harvested.
The north–south treeline and brushy edges provide natural concealment and flight corridors, while the open ag fields create prime feeding opportunities. Birds frequently use the ponds as a mid-day rest area before flying out to feed in the surrounding fields, giving hunters consistent opportunities to intercept them at different times of day.
This blend of ponds, wetlands, and productive grain fields makes Hickman Dam East a dependable stop in the Central Flyway, ensuring steady waterfowl activity and quality hunting from opener to freeze-up.

The other reason properties might be unavailable is because we work directly with our landowners and hunts are booked by quota set by our biologist for the current year. That being said, we are willing, and able in most cases, to pre-book you for next season. OR book you in place of someone else canceling their reservation.
You are not legally allowed to access the property, for any adventure, prior to your selected access day. If you try to access the property at all before your selected date(s), without prior approval from IO, you will be subject to trespassing and punishments therein.
