Notes from the landowner

Eaton Ranch is a 920-acre DIY trophy mule deer and whitetail rifle hunting property near Dupree, South Dakota, in Ziebach County and West River deer Unit 64A.

The ranch is mixed-grass prairie at roughly 2,400 feet, cut by a network of draws and creek bottoms and topped with eroded breaks and natural buttes. Two water features, including a 2-acre lake, give wildlife dependable water all season. It is classic rifle country: glass long distances from the high ground, find a mature buck bedded in the breaks or working a draw, and plan your stalk.

This is an exclusive 5-day hunt. One party of up to two hunters has the entire ranch, with no other hunters on the property. Park at the stock area 1.2 miles off Iron Lightning Road and use the ranch's two-track roads to retrieve game by vehicle. Portable stands and ground blinds are allowed.

The hunt runs during the November West River rifle season, right during the rut. It is for mule deer bucks scoring 161" or better and whitetail bucks scoring 141" or better. You will need a Unit 64A deer license from SD Game, Fish and Parks, where license holders posted a 65% success rate in 2025.

Game and habitat information

Mule deer are the predominant species on the ranch, with whitetails on the same ground. Mule deer bed in the breaks around the buttes, using the high ground to watch for danger, while creek bottoms and draws hold deer during the day and serve as travel corridors to feed and water.

For a rifle hunter, the buttes and breaks are the key: they give you long views across the draws and open prairie, making spot-and-stalk hunting productive. The 2-acre lake and second water feature are reliable places to check morning and evening. With a single party on 920 acres, deer are not pressured by other hunters on the property.

License and Application

Unit: West River Deer Unit 64A (Ziebach County). License: Type 01, one Any Deer. Current allocation: 250 resident and 20 nonresident licenses ($45 resident, $375 nonresident).

Draw odds: In the 2025 draw, 314 residents listed Unit 64A Any Deer as their first choice for 250 licenses, and 67 nonresidents applied first choice for 20 licenses. That works out to enough licenses for roughly 4 of every 5 resident first-choice applicants and about 1 of every 3 nonresident first-choice applicants. Preference points improve your odds.

Hunter success: Hunters holding a Unit 64A Any Deer license had a 65% success rate in 2025, well above the 49% average across all West River units, and the reported buck harvest was split evenly between whitetails and mule deer (source: SD GFP 2025 West River Firearm Deer Harvest Report).

How to get a license: Unit 64A licenses are awarded through the SD GFP combined deer draw. Any licenses left after the draws are sold first come, first served until the season closes. You must hold a valid Unit 64A license to book this hunt. gfp.sd.gov.

Current Season

This hunt is available during the South Dakota West River rifle deer season in November. Season dates are set each year by SD Game, Fish and Parks.
Check current season dates and regulations at gfp.sd.gov before your hunt.

Harvest Reports

After your hunt, you will be sent an automated Harvest Report. To assist Infinite Outdoors in maintaining the quality of properties, and to continue to put conservation at the forefront, we require that the harvest report be completely filled out and returned. Failure to fill out the harvest report within 2 weeks of the hunt taking place will result in a $25 fine. If you are unsuccessful in filling your tag, Infinite Outdoors still needs to have that information provided to them. This is how we make changes to future years' harvest quotas and continue to be the most well managed access and conservation platform in the country.
