Notes from the landowner

Dates for this property will be posted soon.

Shamrock Hills is truly one of the best examples of high desert southern Wyoming wintering areas and just a short drive NW of Rawlins, WY. This "Checkerboard" of public and private land is known for its large herds of Elk, Deer, and Pronghorn as well as rich deposits of coal, oil, and natural gas. The Checkerboard land ownership pattern was created by the transcontinental railroad in the 1800's. This effectively serves to landlock public parcels with private land. While this is controversial for some hunters, access to this private ranch allows for unhindered access to well over 12,000 acres of public and private land.

Game and habitat information

While at first glance the landscape can seem barren and dry, there are plenty of springs and oases in the desert to support trophy specimens. This area serves as a vital route and wintering area for herds of Elk and Deer found south in the Sierra Madre mountain range. The region NW of Rawlins has healthy elk populations, thanks in part to the diverse habitats that support these animals. The herds migrate between higher elevations in the summer and lower elevations during the spring and winter, making the location perfect for fall Elk. Deep draws that hide water sources and large stands of Juniper give herds ample cover. Most elk shed their antlers between late February and April, depending on weather, nutrition, and herd dynamics, this property is ideally suited to host herds during that time period.

The head or skull with antlers and horns attached to a big game animal cannot be removed without prior approval from a Wyoming Game and Fish law enforcement officer. If approval is granted, the purchase of a Wyoming Interstate Game Tag is required for any antlers or horns attached to a head or skull plate of a big game animal
