Notes from the landowner

Resort Valley Ranch offers an exceptional opportunity for bear hunters looking to explore one of Colorado’s most privately held and lightly pressured game management units—GMU 461. Located near Foxton and spanning roughly 3,600 acres, this historic ranch has been in our family since the 1940s. The terrain is rugged, wild, and ideal for spotting black bears, which are seen regularly throughout the property. This listing is specifically for bear hunting. While many guests pursue bears as an add-on to their elk or mule deer hunts, those big game species must be booked through the appropriate listings found on the Infinite Outdoors platform. If your primary goal is bear hunting, this is the listing for you. Bear licenses are available over the counter, making this a great opportunity for both seasoned hunters and those newer to pursuing black bears. Bear hunters are also encouraged to take advantage of predator control opportunities; coyotes may be harvested if encountered, but please note that beginning in 2025, a valid small game license is required to do so. Hunters are welcome to bring RVs and ATVs, with the clear understanding that ATVs must stay on existing two-tracks—no off-roading is allowed, except for game retrieval, and even then, we ask that you stick to a single path in and out. The ranch has an established network of roads, though a few are shared as community easements, so minimal outside traffic may occur.

Game and habitat information

Resort Valley Ranch is prime bear country—spanning 3,600 acres of open meadows, thick timber, and aspen groves, with plenty of year-round water from creeks and natural springs. That mix of cover, food, and water gives black bears everything they need, from quiet bedding spots on the north-facing slopes to rich forage across the ranch. We see bears regularly, and GMU 461 has held a healthy population for years, thanks in part to the fact that most of the land around here is private and doesn’t get much pressure. That means the bears are less spooked and stick to their patterns, giving hunters a better chance at success. Colorado only has black bears, but they come in all shades—it's pretty common to see a cinnamon-phase bear out here, which always adds some excitement to the hunt. Bears are most active from mid-summer through early fall, when they’re feeding heavy on berries, nuts, carcasses and bugs to bulk up for winter. If you’re looking for a place where you can hunt in peace, with good odds and a real shot at a unique bear, this ranch won’t disappoint.
