Notes from the landowner

Memberships at Jamestown Hunt Club, a 5,000-acre deer hunting club in the Waccamaw River bottoms northwest of Calabash, in Brunswick County, North Carolina, are limited by design. This is a small, tight-knit club where members coordinate hunts, help each other out, and put real investment back into the property every year.

Membership gets you your own ground: an exclusive stand area assigned to you for the full membership year, complete with a feeder, a blind, a game camera, and nine months of corn. Beyond your own area, you have access to the club stands, one approved temporary stand elsewhere on the property, and a river stand on the Waccamaw that you reach from the club’s private boat launch.

Jamestown is managed for trophy deer, and it shows. Bucks in the 140 to 150-plus class have come off this property, and the herd keeps improving under the club’s size limits. Add a strong hog population, roam-the-club turkey hunting in the spring, ducks and fishing on the river, and small game, and you have something to hunt nearly every month of the year.

Bring the family. Your spouse and dependents up to age 21 hunt with you as part of your membership, and on-site lodging, a shooting range, and a skinning shack with winches come with it. When you want a break from the woods, Sunset Beach, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC are about 15 minutes away.

Premium lodging near the beach is available at an additional cost. Your hunt price stays the same; you book and pay for the upgrade directly with the host at www.retreatmyrtlebeach.com.

Game and habitat information

The Waccamaw River drainage is blackwater bottomland: swampy floodplain, cypress and gum sloughs, and hardwood ridges of laurel oak, overcup oak, and live oak, with Atlantic white cedar and loblolly pine. That mix holds whitetails, hogs, and turkeys on the high ground and draws wood ducks and other waterfowl to the river and Round Lake. Member feeders, club food plots, and nine months of corn keep the deer herd fed and growing.

Membership Includes

An exclusive stand area for your private use, April 1 through March 31. Feeder, blind, game camera, and nine months of corn. Access to the club stands, one approved temporary stand, and a river stand. A private boat launch on the Waccamaw River. Hunting for deer (buck and doe), hogs, turkey, small game, and waterfowl, plus fishing. Your spouse and dependents (up to age 21) included. Up to 3 guests per year. On-site lodging, a shooting range, and a skinning shack with winches.

Deer

2 bucks and 2 does per member per year; your spouse and dependents hunting with you share your limit. No more than 1 doe outside your exclusive area. Your first buck must score 120 inches minimum, have a 15-inch inside spread, or meet the club’s height standard. A second buck must score 125 inches minimum. The club’s buck sizing crew verifies every buck before it leaves the property, and you can send trail cam photos for pre-approval before taking the shot. Undersized bucks carry a fee of $100 per inch below the minimum. No doe harvest on club stands during the first two weeks of gun season.

Hogs

Up to 6 hogs per member per year. Please pass on older breeding sows. No hog hunting at night during deer seasons, no daytime hog hunting during turkey season (night only, from 1 hour after sunset to 1 hour before sunrise), and no hog hunting from June 1 until deer season without management approval.

Turkey

During turkey season, members can roam the club beyond their own area, staying clear of other members’ stands and food plots. Hang your tag on the mapboard for each area you plan to hunt (2 to 3 max), park at the entrance of the area you are hunting, and remove your tags when you are done.

Waterfowl and Fishing

River stands, Round Lake, and the private boat launch put you on the Waccamaw. River stands must be within 250 yards of the river, downstream of the first bend from the Round Lake entrance, and accessed only by boat.

Small Game

Squirrels, raccoons, coyotes, and more, per NC regulations.

Guest and Family

Up to 3 guests per year, with a maximum of 2 visits per guest. Guests must sign a waiver, stay with their hosting member on club grounds, and may not take deer. Guests may duck hunt, turkey hunt, and fish only beside their hosting member. Guests hunting hogs in a separate location pay $25 per day and $300 per hog. Spouses and dependents up to age 21 are not guests; children under 18 must be with you on club grounds.

License and Application

Members must carry a valid North Carolina hunting license, report deer, turkey, and bear harvests to NC Wildlife, and follow the Jamestown Hunt Club Guidelines. Waterfowl hunters also need a federal duck stamp and HIP certification.

Harvest Photos

Send a photo of every deer, turkey, bear, and hog to club management before leaving the property, and send buck photos to the buck sizing crew. Leaving the property without sending a photo carries a $500 fine, plus an additional $1,000 for bucks. Let management know if you hit an animal and could not recover it.

Weapon Recommendations

Hogs are amazingly tough animals, and these recommendations come from years of hunting them on this property. Rifle hunters should bring a .243 Winchester or larger. Please leave the 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington at home; they leave too little margin for error and lead to too many wounded hogs. Bowhunters should use fixed-blade broadheads rather than mechanicals.
