Notes from the landowner

This 2nd rifle hunt offers a great opportunity for hunters to fill their pockets with tags and harvest either species - elk or mule deer - at no additional cost. Situated in a highly traveled elk migration corridor in northwest Colorado, this 1,040-acre private property is set up to provide a consistent and well-managed hunting experience. The ranch has been family owned and operated for over 30 years and sits right in the heart of an area known for strong elk movement as the season progresses. This hunt is operated in partnership with Tallent Outfitters (#2014) and follows a semi-guided, low-pressure approach designed to keep elk movement natural and predictable by limiting pressure across the property. Hunters are assigned a specific bunkhouse or camper location and remain in that area throughout their stay, reducing overall disturbance and increasing the likelihood of steady animal movement. This is a non-exclusive hunt, meaning multiple groups may be on the property at the same time, making it a good fit for those who enjoy a more stationary style of hunting with support available when needed. Lodging is provided in one of seven strategically placed shooting bunkhouses, each accommodating two hunters and equipped with two beds (one upstairs and one downstairs), propane heat, shooting windows, and an elevated porch for added visibility. Hunters can drive directly to their assigned unit for easy access. A hot plate is provided for basic cooking (no stove), so hunters should plan to bring their own meals, and outdoor cooking is allowed with the option to use a tent stove outside. On-site assistance is available to help with field dressing and transporting harvested animals to a central hanging rack, after which hunters are responsible for getting their meat to a processor, with a reliable option located nearby in Craig known for quick turnaround times.

Game and habitat information

This place is about as classic as northwest Colorado gets - big, open sage hills with just enough draws and pockets to hold animals and move them around. You’re not going to see the big migration numbers during 2nd rifle like you would later in the season, but there’s a group of elk that live here year-round and give you a real shot if you stay patient. They tend to stick to the same general areas, feeding out in the open and slipping into the low spots for cover, especially in the mornings and evenings. If weather or pressure pushes elk around in the surrounding area, you can see some added movement come through as well. Mule deer are all over this kind of country too, and this part of Colorado is known for growing some solid bucks, so it’s not uncommon to have deer show up while you’re waiting on elk. They use the same type of ground - open hills to feed and the draws to bed - so you’ll see them moving through the same country.
