Notes from the landowner

This is a DIY waterfowl hunt near Gilcrest, Colorado, on a 7 acre pond. On the edge of the pond is one pit that sits 4 hunters - an old water tank that was cut in half and buried in the ground. Hunters are not required to hunt from this location, and may bring their own a-frame or simply hide in the brush if they choose. The pond is roughly 6 feet deep in the middle, but is very wadable along the edges. With that being said, hunters will want to bring some sort of retrieval tool, whether it is a dog, fishing pole, or small boat/kayak to retrieve any birds from the middle of the pond. Please note that there are residences and other structures within a few hundred yards of this pond, so be mindful of your shooting lanes. There is plenty of open space to shoot, but we'd like to avoid any issues. Access to the pond is very easy, as you can drive right up to it. There are a few gates to go through which you are expected to close after entering, and after setting up your decoy spread the parking spot will be roughly 200 yards away. Please treat our property with respect, don't speed, pick up after yourself, and come back as many times as possible! There are no bathrooms on site so please don't treat our property like your toilet - Gilcrest and Platteville are only a short drive away.

Game and habitat information

This property is located in the Northeast Zone of Colorado within the Central Flyway. The pond attracts a variety of duck species throughout the season and will also hold dark geese at times. Be sure to check Colorado Parks & Wildlife season dates for legal species and shooting hours. The pond is shallow along the edges and deepens toward the middle, with open water expected through most of the year. An ice eater will be provided during the coldest months to maintain an open pocket. The property is available during early teal season beginning in September. The South Platte River lies roughly 5 miles to the west and serves as a major waterfowl roost for the region, with birds regularly working the surrounding area throughout migration.
