Brown Trout, Rainbow TroutAmenities
River, Guides AllowedEnjoy just over one mile of the Little Arkansas River just outside of Salida, Colorado. This historic cattle ranch was founded in 1868. It has been in the family for 7 generations and still runs an active cattle operation. This property has had extensive river restoration work completed over the past several years. You will find phenomenal structure that offers pools, eddies, and riffles. The average brown trout will range from 12″ – 14″ but a few bigger fish will linger in the deeper holes. Come prepared with a 3-weight – 5-weight rod. There are plenty of casting lanes to target willing fish. River access is easy for people of all ages.
Due to livestock and other concerns, dogs and other pets are NOT permitted on this property.
Please keep in mind this is an active ranch that has cattle on the property. During the springtime, the mother cattle are very protective of their calves. Please do not try and pet the calves. Fences are being installed to keep the cows away from the river and anglers, this is to protect the riparian vegetation. This project should be completed by the end of the summer.
This property is managed in partnership with RareWaters. By booking this property, you agree to RareWaters's Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.

This is a perfect little stream and I had a great day. I fished from about 9:30am-1:30 pm and landed 36 fish (lost a few more). The fish ran from 6" - 14" but most were in the 10"-12" range. Two were rainbows and the remainder were browns. A hopper-dropper rig works well. I used a gold chubby for the hopper and an HDA Fav for the dropper (tungsten head to get it down). Most of the fish took the dropper but a few aggressively slammed the Chubby. My only suggestion for this property would be clearer markings for how to walk along the stream while walking back to your car. While fishing of course you just work your way up stream but on the return it wasn't clear where you should go. I didn't want to walk in the hayfield and immediately along the river there were dead fall trees that made it difficult to get around.

All browns today, but have netted bows on previous trips here. Aggressive hits, muscular healthy fighters. Most all surface feeds in mid-current runs, along foam lines. No surface eats in stair-step deep pools (there are a lot of these features), but streamers run deep will tempt trout holding there. Mr. Hutchinson is a wonderful and gracious gentleman, always drops by to say hello. We are fortunate to have this property and relationship!
