Notes from the landowner

Enjoy just over one mile of the Little Arkansas River just outside of Salida, Colorado. This historic cattle ranch was founded in 1868. It has been in the family for 7 generations and still runs an active cattle operation. This property has had extensive river restoration work completed over the past several years. You will find phenomenal structure that offers pools, eddies, and riffles. The average brown trout will range from 12″ – 14″ but a few bigger fish will linger in the deeper holes. Come prepared with a 3-weight – 5-weight rod. There are plenty of casting lanes to target willing fish. River access is easy for people of all ages.

Due to livestock and other concerns, dogs and other pets are NOT permitted on this property.

Please keep in mind this is an active ranch that has cattle on the property. During the springtime, the mother cattle are very protective of their calves. Please do not try and pet the calves. Fences are being installed to keep the cows away from the river and anglers, this is to protect the riparian vegetation. This project should be completed by the end of the summer.

Incredible property. Easy to find, easy access....but easy to forget about the rest of the world. Perfect Dry-Dropper water. Chubby with a variety of small soft hackles...anything red!

Took advantage of a small bump in flows to visit one of my favorite properties. When the river hit 20cfs, i decided to go and see how the fishing had weathered this prolonged period of low flows. It ended up being better than expected as i found a number of trout had managed to survive in the deeper holes. I did not expect to find the numbers I had encountered in visits past but a few browns were still present, active and healthy. They responded well to a small streamer. Chatting with Art the owner is always a bonus!

The creek is situated in the pastureland of a working ranch about a 1/4 mile from Hwy 50. The location is beautiful and there are several plunge pools that have good fish in the 12"-16" range as well as some fish in the 8"-10" along structures. The best fishing for the day was downstream of the parking area (fish in the morning). The upper stream is crowded with dense willows. For the air temps we in the mid 80"s with water temps in the plunge pools at low 50's. The creek water was low and very clear so the action was primarily in deeper water. A good number of fish were mostly caught by nymphing (perditions, pheasant tails, caddis larvae, and psycho princes). Hoppers worked well in the earlier morning hours. An enjoyable day with a baker's dozen of fish to add to an enjoyable experience.

As always, I enjoyed this property. Unfortunately, a client call came up and I didn't get to fish too long.

We think it's important to mentor the next generation of anglers. Youth between the ages of 13 and 17 are 50% off for all fishing and small game when you reserve on the Infinite Outdoors app. However, kids 13-17 will need to have an Infinite Outdoors Membership. Youth 12 and under are free and do not need a membership but must follow all property rules.
