Notes from the landowner

Wolf Pen offers fall turkey hunting on 35 private acres near Tyner, Kentucky, in Jackson County, with a long season that runs from early September into mid-January.

Fall turkeys travel in flocks, feeding through the hardwoods and roosting in the mature timber near Wolf Pen Creek. They move across the property's ridges, edges, and hollows on steady daily routines, which gives you two classic options: set up on their travel route, or scatter the flock and call the birds back together. The steep ridge-and-hollow terrain helps you close the distance without being seen.

One party of up to two hunters has the property at a time. Access is walk-in only: park at the designated parking area off the easement road and hunt on foot, which keeps flocks on their natural routines. Camping is allowed as well.

Hunt with a bow through the full fall archery season, with a crossbow during the fall crossbow periods, or with a shotgun during the week-long fall shotgun seasons in late October and early December. Each hunter may take two turkeys in the fall, one per day: one with a beard of 3 inches or longer and one without. You need a Kentucky annual hunting license and a fall turkey permit, sold over the counter with no draw. Tyner and McKee are the closest towns for supplies.

Game and habitat information

In fall, wild turkeys gather in family flocks of hens and young birds, while adult gobblers often band together on their own. Flocks feed through Wolf Pen's mixed hardwoods for mast, seeds, and insects, roost in the mature timber near Wolf Pen Creek, and follow fairly steady routes across the ridges, benches, and edges. Scouting for fresh scratching and droppings, then either setting up on a travel route or breaking up a flock and calling birds back to the scatter point, are the classic fall tactics on this kind of ground.
