Notes from the landowner

Welcome to one of the better kept secrets in northeast Wyoming. Cross County offers wide open DIY prairie dog and coyote hunting on roughly 6,400 acres of private land just north of Buffalo. If you've been looking for a place to stretch out, shoot a lot, and not worry about bumping into other hunters - this is it. The ranch has several well-maintained roads that will get you from one end of the property to the other with ease, and that matters here because we have multiple prairie dog towns spread across the ranch. As an added bonus, we border just under 6,000 acres of BLM and Wyoming State ground that is otherwise inaccessible without permission through private property - giving you even more country to cover and even less pressure to deal with.

One thing to be aware of upfront is our access situation. Because we share private roads with neighboring properties, all access into and out of the ranch must be accompanied by us. After you book, we'll reach out directly to get a plan in place and make sure you're taken care of from the start. We ask that all vehicle travel stays on existing ranch roads, as off-roading is not permitted. Buffalo is only a few miles down the road and has everything you'd need for food, fuel, and supplies throughout your stay.

Game and habitat information

Cross County sits in the open grassland and rolling plains country just north of Buffalo, and it holds a healthy population of prairie dogs across multiple established towns spread throughout the property. Prairie dogs are a year-round hunting opportunity in Wyoming, but spring and early summer - particularly May and June - tend to be the most productive, as activity peaks with feeding, colony maintenance, and pups beginning to emerge from burrows. Prairie dogs are generally active all day, but mornings and early evenings typically see the most movement above ground. During the hottest part of the day, they tend to slow down and spend more time in their burrows. That said, there is shootable activity throughout the day on a good town, and hunting remains solid well into summer and fall most years. Coyotes are present in the area as well. Prairie dog towns naturally draw predators, so hunters who want to mix in some calling between setups will have opportunities to do so.

If there is a lapse in availability, please do not be discouraged to reach out to IO. All calendars are set and managed by landowners, and unavailability is set by them. However, IO is willing to reach out on your behalf, to check on available dates. Other reasons for unavailable dates include biologist recommended hunter/harvest quotas that landowners implement, as well as state season dates not being released.
