Notes from the landowner

Spotted Tail Farm includes 780 acres split between two separate parcels, located just a few miles north of the South Platte River near Mitchell, Nebraska. While there's no camping or lodging available on the land itself, overnight accommodations are easy to find in Mitchell or Scottsbluff, both of which are a short drive away. The property offers great opportunity for both bow and pheasant hunters, with plenty of room to spread out and hit several different types of terrain throughout the day. Hunters will find success here with or without the use of dogs - but it's always nice to have a canine companion to dig up a few birds for you! Access is straightforward, with entry points found directly off public county roads. Hunters may responsibly park along the roadside, as long as they are not blocking traffic. All hunters must follow Nebraska state regulations for turkey hunting, provide their own valid hunting license, and bring their own blinds if they plan to use one. This is a practical and easy-to-navigate place to hunt, with the flexibility to create your own setup.

Game and habitat information

The acreage on this farm is split between two parcels, offering a strong mix of irrigated cropland and native cover that makes for good pheasant country. On the East Farm, approximately 397 acres are planted in irrigated alfalfa and corn, providing an important food source for pheasants, especially in the late season when other options start to thin out. Surrounding those fields are 200 acres of rolling hills blanketed with native grasses, shrubs, and yucca, which offer ideal cover for roosting and protection from predators. Spotted Tail Creek winds through this area from northeast to southwest, delivering a steady water source and adding thicker habitat along the banks—spots where pheasants tend to hold tight when pressured.

The West Farm includes about 125 acres of irrigated corn, with another 60 acres of low, rolling hills covered in the same native vegetation. These grassy areas and edges between crop and cover are exactly where pheasants like to hunker down, especially early in the morning or during windy days. The transition zones between food, cover, and water on both parcels create classic upland bird habitat. For hunters, this setup offers the chance to work dogs through productive ground and locate birds that are using the cover throughout the day. With consistent land management and low pressure, pheasants in this part of western Nebraska—particularly near Mitchell—can be found in decent numbers, giving hunters a solid shot at a flush or two in the right conditions.
