Notes from the landowner

Wolf Pen is a 35-acre private spring turkey hunting property near Tyner, Kentucky, in Jackson County, tucked into the hardwood ridges and hollows of eastern Kentucky.

Spring in these hills means gobbles rolling from ridge to ridge at first light. Turkeys roost in the mature timber near Wolf Pen Creek and work the hardwood ridges, edges, and benches after fly down. The steep ground lets you slip in below a ridge line, stay out of sight, and get set up close before you ever make a call.

Each 2-day hunt is yours alone, with one party of up to two hunters on the property at a time. Access is walk-in only, so there is no truck traffic to spook birds off the roost. Park at the designated parking area off the easement road, slip in on foot in the dark, and be listening from a ridge before the first gobble. Camping is welcome if you want to stay close.

Kentucky's spring season opens in April, and each hunter may take two male or bearded turkeys per season, one per day. You will need a Kentucky annual hunting license and a spring turkey permit, both sold over the counter with no draw. Short-term licenses are not valid for turkey hunting. Tyner has groceries and gas, and McKee has restaurants and lodging

Game and habitat information

Wolf Pen's mixed hardwood ridges and hollows give wild turkeys mature roost timber near Wolf Pen Creek, cover on the slopes, and open ridge tops and edges to strut. Early in the season, gobblers are often with hens and follow them after fly down. As hens begin nesting, toms get more responsive to calling and often travel ridges, benches, and edges in mid-morning looking for company. Ridge-and-hollow terrain carries sound well, so start each morning high and listen.

To assist Infinite Outdoors in maintaining the quality of properties, and to continue to put conservation at the forefront, we require that the harvest report be completely filled out and returned. Failure to fill out the harvest report within 2 weeks of the hunt taking place will result in a $25 fine. If you are unsuccessful in filling your tag, Infinite Outdoors still needs to have that information provided to them.
