1158Nestled near Virginia Dale, Colorado, Mountain View Turkey offers turkey hunters a wonderful experience in a historic and diverse landscape. The ranch was homesteaded and has been under the ownership of the same family for almost a century! In that time, it has seen very little hunting pressure, especially for turkeys. In addition to the private deeded acreage, hunters have direct access to adjacent Roosevelt National Forest and the Cherokee State Wildlife Area, significantly expanding the scope of their hunting experience. Mountain View is primarily utilized as a cattle ranch, so hunters should note that it is subject to cattle operations at any time. Turkeys will often flip over cow pies and pick out grains, seeds or bugs, so they certainly don't mind cows! On site lodging may be an available option on this property, pending availability - they are currently under construction and may not be ready by spring. Existing two-track roads facilitate navigation throughout the property; however, off-road travel is restricted to minimize environmental impact, with exceptions made for game retrieval - though with turkey hunting it is recommended to pack out a bird on your back to your vehicle.
Mountain View Turkey falls in GMU 191, which offers over the counter turkey tags in the Colorado seasons. This property lies within the native range of the Merriam's wild turkey, a subspecies well-adapted to Colorado's mountainous regions. Merriam's turkeys are primarily found in high-elevation foothills west of I-25, often inhabiting ponderosa pine, aspen, and Gambel oak habitats. On this property, turkeys typically roost over the various creeks and in the deeper canyons, utilizing the dense canopy for protection. In the spring, they disperse into smaller groups, while in winter, they congregate into larger flocks. The property's diverse landscape, featuring dark timber, aspen groves, open fields, and spring-fed canyons, provides ideal forage and cover for these birds. Abundant natural food sources, such as nuts, seeds, fruits, and insects, thrive in these habitats, attracting turkeys, especially during the fall months when they are actively foraging to prepare for winter. The property's proximity to the Cherokee State Wildlife Area further enhances hunting opportunities, as this area is managed to support a variety of wildlife species, including turkeys. With its strategic location, diverse habitat, and thoughtful land stewardship, this property offers a prime destination for turkey hunting enthusiasts seeking a rewarding experience.
