Notes from the landowner

Access 1 mile of the Colorado River on a very secluded family ranch. Fish size averages 10-16″ with the occasional 18″ or larger trout. The lucky angler will hook up with the elusive Colorado River cutthroat!! Your views will include a cliffside with Gordon the Golden Eagle cruising around looking for lunch. There are two islands on the downstream side of the property that in low waters, are accessible. Getting down to the lower section of the river is steep. We recommend younger anglers and people with mobility issues stay on the upper section of the property.

Due to livestock and other concerns, dogs and other pets are NOT permitted on this property.

Game and habitat information

The lower section has more fishability and structure and is away from the homes, however it is very steep and requires you to be in good physical condition as you will need to bushwhack to and navigate steep terrain to get to the river.

4 out of 5 stars

Wonderful property owners! Note that the camping is not dispersed, but rather is in one of the parking lots for the ranch. But…it has electrical hookups! And is literally right next to the river. This property is beautiful, but very challenging. Big river, high flows, and often extremely challenging bush whacking to reach the best spots. Only consider this when the water conditions are low, unless you plan to float it. Caught some awesome CO river browns, and of course the big one got away.

Gorgeous area along the Colorado, but didn’t see many fish and didn’t catch anything in the 4 hours I was there. Spent too much time hiking and bushwhacking through the lower section. Flows around 1100 cfs. Challenging property layout with none of the usual RW signage to help you. A few well-placed RW signs would have helped with getting a quicker/easier lay of the property. Maybe the owner wouldn’t agree to the signage? Lower section looks fishier than the upper. Numerous houses along the upper river bank, so you’ll be fishing in someone’s backyard on the upper section. The parking area closest to the water is actually in the driveway of the owner’s house. I parked near the RR track as it was a more central spot to both sections. The property description of not “recommending” those with mobility issues to try the lower section needs to be more specific. “Steep” is an understatement. I’m almost 60 but in very good health/shape with no mobility issues. This was the toughest hike I’ve ever had in 25+ years of CO/WY/ID/UT fly fishing. The only way to access the lower section is to walk the train tracks and go down an extremely steep 20-30’ bank. The brush is too thick to access any other way than by using the train track access. Look for the point where the train track gets the closest to the river, then go down. The vegetation is too thick to go down anywhere else. Once you’re on the lower section, the bank is also steep with some very deep drop offs on the river’s edge. The thick vegetation, trees, and bushes severely limited the downstream access. I only had about 200 ft of lower access before I ran into a wall of high vegetation along the bank. No real trail along the bank and no way to cross to the far side. Water depth was too high to access the island mentioned in the description. Upper section water depth was only about 3-4” deep, very flat and slow. You could cross over to the far bank, but the access map seems to show the private property breaking the upper and lower sections also stretches to the far bank. It’s a beautiful location, but the access challenges are too much to overcome for the small amount of fishable water. I’m surprised this property is on the RW/IO list because of the access challenges. The property description and the map both need to include specifics on how to access the lower section. Because of the river access and lower stream side obstacles, I won’t be going back.

We really appreciate you taking the time to leave such a well thought out and detailed review. It helps future anglers plan their adventure with confidence knowing what to expect.

Thanks for your feedback. While we do note the steep terrain in the property description, we’ll revisit the listing to make sure it’s as clear and specific as possible. Some of our properties don’t have physical signage, which is why we provide detailed maps and navigation through the IO app. Our platform offers a wide variety of fishing properties suited to different skill levels and preferences, and we’ll use your input to continue improving descriptions so anglers can better match trips to their needs.

I fished this property twice in four days. The lower section (accessed by the railroad tracks) was definitely the best of the two sections available. I fished streamers from the bank and had action from all angles: casting out and down into the current, letting it swing back towards the bank and stripping back up upstream, casting upstream and stripping back as fast as I could. The most exciting eat was when a fish came out of the current to swipe at the fly, missed, and turned around and chased it back downstream! All browns. Fished a rusty trombone solo or with a black slumpbuster trailer. There was a nice trico hatch that went off early afternoon. It was bright, sunny, mid-80s day both days on the river there. The train coming through is no joke- definitely an active railroad! The access point is pretty steep; wouldn’t recommend for anyone with mobility issues. The vegetation on the bank is thick, with stands of Russian olives to work around. The lower portion has evidence of active beavers, so be careful of their slides that can be hidden well in the overgrown vegetation. Aside from the occasional train, it was very quiet, peaceful, and the views don’t disappoint. I will definitely be back!
