Catlin Canal sits just south of Rocky Ford, Colorado - the self-proclaimed dove hunting capital of Colorado - and covers roughly 65 acres of prime dove ground. Hunters have access to the entire property, but it's important to note that two sides of the property border county roads, so shooting lanes need to be minded at all times. There is also a feedlot just south of the property that will hold birds - be mindful of its location and proximity to the county road when setting up. This is a DIY hunt, so come prepared with your own bucket, decoys, and gear. Rocky Ford's reputation as some of the best dove hunting in Colorado is well earned, and this property puts you right in the middle of it.
Rocky Ford has earned its reputation as the dove hunting capital of Colorado, and the Arkansas Valley surrounding it is the reason why. Southeast Colorado runs 10 to 15 degrees warmer than the northern Front Range, and because doves move on with the first cold snap, that warmth keeps birds in the area longer than nearly anywhere else in the state. The property sits roughly 2 miles from the Arkansas River, and the irrigated cropland that the river makes possible in this otherwise arid stretch of the plains is exactly what draws and holds birds in the area. Catlin Canal's open irrigated agricultural ground, the canal itself as a water source, and the feedlot directly to the south create the three-part combination - food, water, and loafing cover - that locks doves into an area and keeps them coming back throughout the day. Rocky Ford is also where Eurasian collared doves were first documented in Colorado, back in 1996, and the population has only grown since. Hunters here will encounter both mourning doves during the September migration and Eurasian collared doves throughout the year.
