Brown Trout, Rainbow TroutAmenities
Camping, Bathroom, River, Dogs Allowed, Guides AllowedJust under two hours from Denver and nestled near Hartsel, Colorado, this mountain meadow property offers peaceful access to both the South Fork (0.75 miles) and the Middle Fork (0.5 miles) of the South Platte River. Two convenient, flat parking areas are available one for each fork with short, easy walks to the water. Access is user-friendly with gentle embankments leading to the river through wide-open fields.
The South Fork section often features mowed paths and includes picnic tables and Adirondack chairs placed riverside—ideal for a midday break or relaxed lunch. The Middle Fork, though slightly wider, has no defined paths, but offers easy wading access and a chance to spot a herd of Tibetan Yaks grazing nearby. This is an active ranch, so expect livestock in the area depending on the time of year.
Guests should adhere to seasonal “Hoot Owl” guidelines in late summer, exiting the river by noon or when temperatures exceed 68°F to help preserve fish health. With dispersed shade, light pressure, and multiple access points, this property is perfect for a quiet day of fishing, or even a longer weekend trip.
Guiding is available on this stretch through their preferred fly shop: Mountain Angler.
The South Fork and Middle Fork of the South Platte River combine here to create a classic high-country freestone experience. Both stretches wind through a high-elevation meadow ecosystem, offering ankle- to waist-deep water—with occasional pools up to 6 feet depending on runoff and seasonal flow. The South Fork features rock-lined streambeds with 2-6 inch stones and slightly steeper banks, which create excellent holding water for trout. The Middle Fork meanders more gradually through wide channels with easier wading access.
Anglers can expect to catch Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, and Cutbows, with average fish around 10 inches. However, during certain times of year, larger trout may migrate up from nearby Spinney Reservoir, so don’t rule out the potential for a big surprise. A 4-6 wt rod in the 7'6" to 9' range works well, though a 9' 5 wt is ideal for longer casts across the open meadow.
Dry fly, nymph, and terrestrial patterns all have a place here. Productive flies include Elk Hair Caddis, Parachute Adams, Tricos, Prince Nymphs, and Pheasant Tails. Wet wading is a great option during warmer months. With varied structure—riffles, cutbanks, glides, and slow bends—this property provides exceptional versatility and scenic beauty year-round.
Best Fishing Seasons:
Spring (April–June): High flows from snowmelt bring fresh hatches and hungry trout. Expect productive fishing with mayfly and caddis activity.
Summer (July–August): Fish early or late to avoid warm water. Follow Hoot Owl guidelines and focus on hoppers, terrestrials, and dry-dropper rigs.
Fall (September–October): Lower pressure and cooler temps bring aggressive feeding before winter—one of the best times to fish this property.
Winter (November–March): Challenging but rewarding; mid-day warmth can bring active fish to nymphs or small midges.
Always check current flows, weather, and regulations before your trip.

Great day on the water. The morning was slow, but the afternoon was on fire. Lots of action on a hopper/dropper. Pretty equal hits between the dry and the nymph. Most fish were 8-10 inches. I lost one fish that was significantly larger. Easy parking and easy access.

I enjoy fishing and being outside. Caught a couple of rainbows on the South Platte side. The water was brown, so difficult, but walked up towards Antero side with no luck. An amazing sunny day. I enjoy the parking area where I ate lunch at the picnic tables.

Great place to fish over the crowded holiday weekend. There were lots of fun-sized fish and there are a few bigger ones tucked into the deeper holes. I started fishing a small streamer as dry fly fishing was spotty and had very good success. Access and parking were great. I'll be coming back in the fall to see how it fishes.
