Welcome to East Buffalo, a DIY prairie dog and coyote hunt on just over 4,000 acres of private land sitting just east of Buffalo, WY. The property has multiple established prairie dog towns spread across it, and the well-maintained ranch roads make it easy to move between them throughout the day - load up, drive to the next town, and get back at it. A capable 4WD vehicle will get you around the property without any issues. We do ask that you stay off the roads when they're wet and let them dry out before driving, and that all vehicle travel stays on existing roads - no off-roading. The ranch shares borders with roughly 1,500 acres of BLM and Wyoming State land that connects to over 2,700 additional acres of accessible BLM to the west, giving hunters who want to cover more ground plenty of extra country to work through. There is no camping on the property, but Buffalo is under 15 miles away and has solid options for lodging to use as your basecamp for the duration of your stay.
The East Buffalo property sits in the transition zone between the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains and the open high plains of northeastern Wyoming - a landscape well suited for prairie dogs. The mix of native grassland, sagebrush flats, and open terrain provides exactly the kind of habitat black-tailed prairie dogs thrive in, and the ranch has multiple established colonies that have been active for years. Late spring through early summer is generally the most active time on the towns, with May and June being the peak as young prairie dogs emerge from the burrows and above-ground activity is at its highest. That said, the colonies here hold shootable numbers well into summer and fall. Prairie dogs are diurnal and most active in the morning and evening hours, with midday activity slowing during the hottest parts of the season. Coyotes are a natural presence around active prairie dog towns and can show up at any point during the day, making them an opportunistic add for hunters who want to mix in some calling between setups.
