Hartsel Ranch puts 1,200 acres of wide open South Park high country in front of you for a DIY varmint hunt - the kind of big, rolling terrain that was built for this style of hunting. Coyotes are the primary target here, and the ranch has them, along with other small game and varmint species that call this high country ground home. This is a glassing and covering-ground style of hunt - bring your calls, your range finder, and plan to put in some miles on foot from the designated parking areas. The open nature of the terrain lends itself well to spot and stalk setups, calling sequences from elevated vantage points, or simply working the land methodically and letting the country show you what it has. The nearly 3,000 acres of public land bordering the ranch can be incorporated into your hunt, giving you a significant amount of additional ground to work. As always, there are several structures and lodges on the property - be mindful of their locations and avoid discharging firearms in their direction or close vicinity. Take note of all no-hunt zones in the Infinite Outdoors app before heading out. Be mindful of the public fishing easement that is offered on this private ranch as well - though rare through the fall and winter, it is possible to encounter anglers on the public easement.
Hartsel Ranch sits in the South Park basin at roughly 9,000 feet - a wide open, high country grassland environment that is well suited for varmint hunting, particularly coyotes. Coyotes are found in virtually every habitat across Colorado, from the plains to high mountain basins, and will establish territory anywhere they can find a reliable food source - and South Park, with its mix of open grassland, river bottom, and abundant small mammal populations, checks every box. Mountain coyotes tend to concentrate in open meadow terrain rather than heavy timber, as it gives them better access to prey and room to hunt - which describes the majority of Hartsel Ranch's 1,200 acres almost perfectly. The open rolling terrain here is ideal for calling setups, giving hunters long sight lines and the ability to cover ground efficiently between stands. Cottontail rabbits, Richardson's ground squirrels, and prairie dogs round out the varmint opportunities on the property and provide additional shooting when they're encountered. The nearly 3,000 acres of bordering public land adds to the overall hunting area and helps keep a steady supply of coyotes moving through the private boundaries throughout the season.
