Camping, Stillwater, River, Partial Phone ServiceThis property is “request to book”. See below for more details. Located just 15 minutes from Buena Vista and Salida, Chalk Creek is a small freestone fishery. A consolidation of tributaries from the western drainages of Mt. Princeton (14,196’) and Mt. Antero (14,275), two of Colorado’s acclaimed 14ners. With easy access, most anglers will have no issues navigating the ¾ of a mile of this small freestone creek. Most of the riverbed is lined with 3-8” size river rocks. The property offers multiple access points to the creek, runs and small pools abound. Wet wading is a great way to approach this property.
Anglers only have access to the south side of the creek. Please stay off of the north bank.
Anglers must not forget they also can access a 1-acre spring feed pond, that stays mostly free of ice even in the depths of winter. The stories that surround this pond and the potential species are endless. Local farmers have historically used this pond as a catchall for clearing out farm ditches at the end of the season. Anglers will be able to approach the pond from nearly every direction. For a higher level of enjoyment, anglers should approach this fishery with 2-4wt rods ranging in length from 6’6” to 8’4”.
Due to livestock and other concerns, dogs and other pets are NOT permitted on this property.
While on property anglers will have the opportunity to target Brown, Brook, and Rainbow Trout. Anglers can expect fish to be looking to the surface most of the year. Many anglers when researching Chalk Creek will find the average size of fish to be in the smaller range of 6-10”. That being said, this property is unique in that its proximity to the Arkansas River invites larger fish to come up this freestone for a needed break. Anglers may be surprised by what they will find at the end of their line.

Definitely into early runoff, higher elevated flows, and turbid off color water. Too fast to wade upstream at this flow (80 cfs). We got into a decent number of trout, mostly browns, but a few rainbow surprises. Upper half of property was inaccessible due to heavy current, and the impassable barbed wire fence that hugs the high water line the whole way up. Be sure to stay on RW side of stream (south), property owners on north bank are vigilant. An anglers ladder over the fence at the top of the property is needed badly.

Very nice stretch of river, lots of structure with fish holding in riffles, runs and pools. Caught browns and bows on nymphs and streamers. A bit cold and late in the season for dries, but top water feeds are surely there in the right conditions. Upstream access is challenging without fence ladder. Quite a bit of neighbor activity on north side of creek, so be respectful of mid-stream boundary line so we can keep this property :)

Short stretch but plenty of structure to hold fish. Trout were exactly where you would expect them to be. Mostly pocket water best fished with a small streamer imo. Managed to land several nice browns and one large bow. Excellent outcome for early winter fishing. River in great shape at about 40cfs. One improvement to consider is adding a step ladder at the very top of the property to ease access to the river. Considering how tight the fence is, the upper third of the property is essentially impossible to access except if you stay in the river and make your way up, which will be a challenge for most fishermen due to fast moving water and overgrown streamside vegetation. Caution: bottom is extremely slippery!
