Notes from the landowner

Looking to catch a Trout in Oregon? Well, then you should keep Crooked River in mind. Enjoy 1.5 miles of fishing on the Crooked River just outside of Prineville, Oregon. Here you will find rainbow trout, you may also find some brown trout, whitefish, bass, and pike minnow in certain areas of the river. The Crooked River is known to be one of the best fly-fishing rivers in Oregon. This area is known more for its quantity of fish rather than the size of the fish. Access to this property will be fairly easy for most anglers and you have access to both sides of the river. There are willows lining some of the North banks of the river, but it has access pockets all up and down this beat. This property is going to lend to better wade fishing, but you can find shore fishing as well. May, June, and July will be your best months to fish. Keep your eye out for wildlife as you enjoy the fishing and the scenery. Take note that this property can have rattlesnakes and mountain lions on it.

Please note, Under the Oregon Stream Access Law, the public may use rivers and streams for recreational purposes up to the ordinary high-water mark. Although unlikely, you could potentially see other anglers while on this property.

Game and habitat information

The river has several rocky shelves and deep pools, offering great opportunities for nymphing and dry fly fishing and ample room to cast. Various nymph patterns, such as Pheasant Tails, Hare's Ears, and Zebra Midges, tend to be effective. Dry flies like Adams, Elk Hair Caddis, and Blue Winged Olives can work well during hatches. A lightweight fly rod in the 3 to 5 weight range is suitable for most situations on the Crooked River. Expect to catch trout in the 8-12 inch range, and occasionally a few in the 14-16 inch range

great early morning fishing (dry fly), afternoon/midafternoon still good fishing but all sub surfaces. great camping, very quiet, all alone, how fishing is supposed to be. everything was on point, locations, grid, gate, all went well. will certainly do again, great overall experience with rare waters. my new favorite way to fish.

This portion of the river suffers from agricultural influences; tons of foam in the water due to phosphates and possibly other manmade discharges. The cows don't help, especially with the condition of the river bank. In addition to the excessive foam, the water was warm, muddy/discolored, and runs through banks of exposed soil. There is little to gravel, stones, or rock in the river at this site. I spent a disappointing hour and left.

My father-in-law and I tried to fish this property in late May but there was way too much water due to a late snow melt and spring runoff. We came back in late June and found the river much more manageable. We caught a couple of redside trout and a bunch of pike minnow and mountain white fish. I have fished public waters below the dam on the crooked before but had never had the opportunity to fish this upper section which is primarily private land. It was really nice to have such a tranquil experience walking this stretch just the two of us.
