NoThis property offers 3 miles of private access along Montana’s iconic Big Hole River, just upstream from one of its sister properties but in an entirely different watershed character. The river meanders more significantly here, creating a wide variety of features, including sweeping bends and multiple cutbanks that add diversity and fish-holding structure. Access is available year-round, and anglers can park in several designated spots along the river. The upstream parking area is flat and also serves as a camping location and is perfect for anglers looking to extend their stay.
The ranch is active year-round, so expect to encounter cattle, depending on the season. Please yield to ranch operations, respect fencing and gates, and follow all “leave no trace” principles. You’ll need to bring your own water, and if camping, prepare for a primitive setup.
Under Montana’s Stream Access Law, members of the public may be present within the high-water mark, although this stretch is typically quiet and offers a peaceful, uncrowded experience.
This upper stretch of the Big Hole River is a prime example of a classic freestone trout fishery with deep conservation value. It's home to the last naturally occurring fluvial Arctic Grayling population in the lower 48 states, and also supports strong numbers of Rainbow, Brown, and Brook Trout. The river here is ideal for wading when flows are manageable. The streambed contains rocks of varying sizes, anglers are advised to bring a wading staff for additional stability. While most of the banks are easily navigable, occasional steeper sections require care when entering or exiting the water.
The Big Hole is renowned for its prolific and diverse hatch schedule.
April: Skwala stoneflies, Western March Browns, and early Baetis kick off the season.
May: The famed Mother’s Day Caddis hatch emerges.
June: The highly anticipated Salmonfly hatch arrives as water temps hit 55°F, followed by Golden Stones and Yellow Sallies.
Summer: PMDs, Baetis, Spruce Moths, Tricos, and persistent caddis ensure consistent surface action.
With its unique meandering structure, abundant insect life, and rich biodiversity, this property offers an unforgettable fly fishing experience for anglers of all levels. Whether you're targeting a trophy trout, hoping to hook into a rare Grayling, or simply enjoying a quiet day surrounded by Montana wilderness, the Upper Big Hole delivers.
