River, Dogs Allowed, Guides AllowedJust three hours from Denver, this high-basin property near Walden, Colorado, offers 1.7 miles of private access on the lower beat of the North Fork of the North Platte River. This stretch flows through wide, island-like hayfields framed by mountain meadows offering both tranquility and easy access. Parking is straightforward, with a flat road and plenty of room to pull off. From there, anglers take a short, 100-foot walk down a gradual embankment to reach the water.
This is an active working cattle ranch, so please be respectful of livestock, farm equipment, and workers. Expect to see about 50 head of cattle on the property, depending on the season. Maintain a speed limit of 15 mph and yield to any vehicles or machinery. Moose are frequently seen on the property both cows and bulls so stay alert and give them plenty of space.
During warmer months (late July and August), please follow “Hoot Owl” guidelines and exit the water by noon or when water temps exceed 68°F. This protects the health of the fishery and supports the landowner's stewardship of the property.
This section of the North Fork winds through classic high-elevation meadow terrain, creating a mix of riffles, long runs, deep cutbanks, and pools ranging from ankle-deep to 6 feet. Stones in the streambed range from 2 to 6 inches, making for stable footing and manageable wading. Willows line much of the river but don’t obstruct casting, giving anglers open lanes for dries, nymphs, or streamers.
Target species include Brown and Rainbow Trout, with opportunities for larger fish holding tight to structure or hugging undercut banks. This section of water is best fished with a 3- to 6-weight rod in the 7'6" to 9' range will be versatile enough for delicate presentations and powerful enough for larger fish when conditions allow.
Recommended Flies:
Elk Hair Caddis
Parachute Adams
Prince Nymphs
Pheasant Tails
Micro streamers
Best Fishing Seasons:
Spring (April–June): Excellent fishing during snowmelt with strong hatches and high water.
Summer (July–August): Fish early or late; follow Hoot Owl guidelines. Hopper-dropper setups and terrestrials can be effective.
Fall (September–October): Ideal conditions cool temps, fewer anglers, and active fish feeding before winter.
Winter (November–March): Limited access; water may freeze over. Low and clear conditions offer a challenge to experienced anglers.
With easy access, beautiful scenery, and a variety of productive water types, this stretch of the North Fork offers a well-rounded experience for anglers of all skill levels.
