Whoopup Canyon is a DIY Turkey property south of Newcastle, WY. Consisting of just under 600 acres of private land, Whoopup Canyon provides opportunity for Turkeys moving down from the BLM foothills into the valley. This was hunted in 2025 successfully from a blind as well as though stalking.
Nestled right at the base of the Black Hills National Forest, Whoopup Canyon offers outstanding turkey habitat across just over 570 acres of diverse terrain. The property sits in a classic transitional zone where the rolling mixed-grass prairie gives way to ponderosa pine stands, rugged draws, and creek-bottom cottonwoods and is exactly the kind of landscape that Merriam's wild turkeys call home. Scattered oak brush and juniper thickets provide excellent roosting cover, while open meadow edges and agricultural flats give birds prime feeding and strutting ground throughout the spring season. Hunters can expect to find birds working their way off roost at first light, filtering down from the timbered ridges and canyon edges onto the more open benches and draws. The varied topography of Whoopup Canyon allows hunters to set up along travel corridors, canyon mouths, and meadow edges giving you plenty of options to locate birds and adapt your approach as the morning unfolds. Spring is the prime time to chase Merriam's turkeys in this part of Wyoming, with gobblers actively searching for hens from mid-April through May. Early mornings are your best window, as toms are fired up and responsive right off the roost. This is a true DIY experience — bring your calls, your patience, and your boots, because this country rewards hunters willing to put in the miles and learn the land.
