Hartsel Ranch offers roughly 1,200 acres of open high country ground just outside of Hartsel, Colorado - a DIY dove hunt in a part of the state that doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves for birds. This is a walk-in hunt, so plan to bring your own bucket, decoys, and gear and cover ground on foot from the designated parking areas. The property is large enough that hunters can move around and find fresh setups throughout the day rather than committing to one spot. The ranch also borders nearly 3,000 acres of Colorado public land, which can easily be worked into your trip and gives you even more ground to cover throughout your stay. There are several structures and lodges on the property - please be mindful of their locations and avoid discharging firearms in their direction or close vicinity. Take note of the no-hunt zones marked in the Infinite Outdoors app before heading out. There is a public fishing easement used on a majority of the river on this ranch - please be mindful of any anglers who may be present on the public water chasing those September browns.
Hartsel Ranch sits in the South Park basin at roughly 9,000 feet - which makes for a unique and somewhat unconventional dove hunting experience. Mourning doves do move through this high-country corridor during the September migration, using the open grassland and river bottom as a travel route as they push south ahead of the cold. At higher elevations, cold weather arrives earlier and doves move south faster than in other regions of the state, so the window here is real but shorter than what hunters experience on the eastern plains or in the lower Arkansas Valley. Hunters who time it right - particularly in the first few weeks of September - can find good numbers of birds moving through and staging on the property. The 1,200 acres of open ranch ground, the South Platte River corridor, and the surrounding native grassland give doves the combination of open feeding ground and water they gravitate toward during migration. Eurasian collared doves are also present in the area and can be hunted year-round with no bag limit, providing opportunity beyond the mourning dove season window.

If there is a lapse in availability, please do not be discouraged to reach out to IO. All calendars are set and managed by landowners, and unavailability is set by them. However, IO is willing to reach out on your behalf, to check on available dates. Other reasons for unavailable dates include biologist recommended hunter/harvest quotas that landowners implement, as well as state season dates not being released.
