Madison Overlook sits along a half mile of the legendary Madison River, just a few miles upstream from the charming town of Ennis, Montana - offering that rare combination of seclusion and convenience that is so hard to find. The Madison has long been nicknamed "the 50-mile riffle," and this stretch lives up to that reputation, delivering the kind of clear, tumbling water that has made this river one of the most celebrated fisheries in the American West. This is a wade-fishing property, as the banks don't lend themselves to easy boat launches, keeping the experience intimate and unhurried - just you, the current, and the fish. While there are no on-site amenities or services, overnight camping by van or tent is welcome, making it easy to wake up at the water's edge and fish the early morning hatch before the world stirs. Despite its peaceful, remote feel, all the restaurants, shops, and outfitters of Ennis are only minutes away, giving you the best of both worlds. Whether you're here to cast a line, watch the sunrise over the river valley, or simply breathe in the wide-open Montana landscape, Madison Overlook delivers an authentic outdoor experience on one of the finest rivers in the country.
The Madison River is a tailwater fishery controlled by Hebgen Dam upstream, yet it carries the character and feel of a classic high-mountain freestone river - fast-moving, broken water with a mix of productive pockets, runs, and slicks. This particular reach is notable for its braided channels and mid-river islands, giving it a distinct structure that sets it apart from much of the Madison corridor. The river supports both Brown and Rainbow Trout in healthy numbers, with Browns averaging around 15 inches and Rainbows close behind at 14 inches; fish in the 16–19 inch range are a regular occurrence. The dam-regulated flows keep water temperatures and conditions relatively stable, allowing the fishery to produce consistently throughout the season. A reliable progression of insect hatches from spring through fall keeps trout actively feeding, making dry fly and nymph fishing productive across a long season. The property also falls within a designated Important Bird Area, and the riparian corridor and surrounding landscape provide habitat for Moose, Whitetail Deer, and Pronghorn, all of which are regularly seen on and around the property. The bank of the river can be steep in this area, so please use caution entering and exiting the river - once in the river, it can be waded up or down stream with ease.
