5 DaysGV Ranch is the ultimate package for DIY big game hunting. Fill your pocket with tags and head to GMU 85 for a 4th rifle adventure. This property provides over 700 acres of private property, and allows hunters to pursue elk, deer, and black bear all at the same time. All tags in this unit must be drawn or picked up on the leftover list, but one perk is that 4th rifle elk tags can be drawn with 0 points and are either sex licenses. This is a true DIY adventure, meaning no additional amenities are provided. Lodging can be found in nearby towns like Aguilar or Trinidad Colorado. Hunters can expect easy access into the properties, but once inside, to get out and hunt from foot. No driving off of existing roads or paths will be tolerated. Please note that a piece of this property borders Colorado State Trust Land, which is not open to the public and inaccessible for this hunt.
This property sits within a recognized elk wintering range and offers the type of habitat and landscape features that elk naturally gravitate toward as they transition to lower elevations later in the year. A mix of open ground and adjacent timber provides a balance of forage and security cover, allowing elk to feed, stage, and hold on the property during late-season conditions. Open meadows and grassy flats serve as key feeding areas, particularly during morning and evening movement, while nearby timbered cover offers bedding and thermal protection during colder weather. Elk commonly use these timber edges to move between feed and cover, creating predictable travel patterns that hunters can take advantage of as the season progresses. The property’s location less than two miles north of public land adds an important pressure dynamic. As hunting pressure increases on surrounding public ground throughout the season, elk naturally shift toward private land where disturbance is reduced. This movement often results in larger groups of elk utilizing the property during late season, increasing both encounter rates and overall hunting opportunity. Late-season hunts are intentionally timed to align with these migration and pressure-driven patterns, allowing elk time to settle into winter range and establish consistent use of the area. When conditions come together, the property can hold substantial numbers of elk, offering hunters a strong chance at locating and intercepting mature animals during late-season hunts.
