14Visit the beautiful San Luis Valley of Colorado and enjoy 1 mile of the North Channel of the Rio Grande River. The views at this property are absolutely stunning and the fishing is prime. This 5th-generation homestead was established over 150 years ago. The Rio Grande wraps around the ranch on both sides so you’re literally on an island. An island in Colorado!! Anglers can expect to catch 12-18″ brown, rainbow, and cutthroat trout. Toss some streamers for big browns lurking in the deep pools! River access is easy, although you’ll have to hop over some barbed wire fencing. 1/4 mile of the South Channel of the Rio Grande River is also available for access.

Not sure if it was my timing, or the flows, but I didn't catch any fish on either of the channels at this property. The main channel is full of willows, brush, etc and accessing the river is very difficult. I didn't see any structure in the river and I hiked to both boundaries, it's essentially one large canal/run, the best fishing spot was right at the bridge where you park. I brought a pool noodle (cut down to 18") to easily navigate under the barb wire (which worked great), but there are very few fly fishable sections, would be good for spin fishing though. The small channel has more structure and I saw some fish rise but wasn't able to net anything. I drove to south fork and netted some fish before end of day.

Four of us fished this property on Saturday the 24th of August. The water was beautiful and running at nearly perfect levels for wading. We started out on the north channel, and yes the river is tough to get into, but it is worth it. The brush and the barb wire fences make this tough to access but we managed without too much trouble. I definitely wouldn't wear waders, you could tear them on the fences. Once in however, we all caught fish. Several nice browns were landed and a couple small rainbows. Nearly everything was caught on top water hopper imitations, and pink seemed to be the better color that day. We fished the southern section on the way out and it is a pretty short section, especially for four people. One of our guys lost the biggest brown of the day in this water. It cleared the water several times and we all agreed it was well over 20". All and all it was a very enjoyable property and we will keep it in mind for the next time we are in the South Fork area. - Shon

I caught 2 small browns and only saw 1 rising rainbow all day. I attributed that to the heavy rain which fell the previous evening and gave the water a little color. But after I returned home and spoke to a friend who had previously fished there a couple of weeks earlier, he told us he hadn’t seen any fish at all. Access to the river is very difficult—the barbed wire is an almost impenetrable fence. I would recommend anyone wanting to fish there take a pair of heavy leather gloves to wrestle with it and don’t wear waders. The banks are covered with long dense grass covering some big holes which makes it difficult to walk. Difficult conditions with little reward.
