VarmintWhoopup Canyon is a DIY varmint hunting property south of Newcastle, WY. Consisting of just under 600 acres of private land, Whoopup Canyon provides opportunity at several species of varmint, with the majority of opportunity coming in the form of prairie dogs. These rodents can provide hunters with some much-needed target practice prior to big game season.
Placed right at the base of the Black Hills National Forest, Whoopup Canyon provides ideal habitat for different species of varmint. Prairie dogs thrive in this area due to the wide-open and untouched space of the prairie. At just over 570 acres, sharp shooters will find multiple different prairie dog towns on this property. This is ideal, since once all dogs within a few hundred yards are hunkered down after a little bit of shooting, hunters can move areas and on to the next town. Spring and summer time make for some of the best times to head out for a prairie dog shoot, though higher temperatures can cause the rodents to spend more time in their burrows. Early morning, cooler days, and evenings should provide lots of opportunity to brush up on those long-range shooting skills.
In the state of Wyoming, there are no license requirements or stamps needed to harvest prairie dogs. There are also no bag limits, and hunting can be conducted on private land all year round. The only stipulation to Wyoming prairie dog hunting, is that no shooting can be done from within a vehicle or on public roads.
Although Wyoming's regulations on prairie dog hunting are minimal, it does not excuse any misuse of this property. Common safety practices will still need to be practiced. Do not shoot across public roads, railroad tracks, or property boundaries.
