9000 ftBald Mountain is a DIY elk hunting property just south of Buena Vista in GMU 481. Consisting of over 220 acres of private land, this property also offers hunters easy and direct access to San Isabel National Forest to the west, and Maxwell Park State Trust Land to the east, which is open to public hunting. Access to this property is done through private dirt roads in fairly rough terrain, so 4WD vehicles are more than recommended. All hunting on the property must be done on foot - meaning no use of ATVs or other offroad vehicles, off of existing tracks and trails will be permitted. The landowner of the property makes a special request to hunters to be particularly respectful and careful of how the land is treated. GMU 481 is known for its high elevation hunting opportunities, and this area lives up to the reputation. Due to this being a DIY hunt, hunters will be expected to provide all of their own gear, licensing, and pack-out services.
Elk hunting in GMU 481 is an extremely sought after adventure. Elk populations in this region of Colorado are healthy and thriving, due to the ideal habitat available to them. Hunters who access the Bald Mountain property will have the choice to hunt both public and private land and can expect to find elk between the elevations of 8,000 ft and 11,000 feet. Hunters can also expect to experience quite the uphill climb if traversing from the private boundaries into national forest, due to a roughly 2,000 ft increase within the first mile (in a straight-line west). Terrain in this area is made up of dark timber, and several open parks. Many drainages also provide elk with several travel corridors, moving up and down the mountains. Look for game trails and sign on each finger coming from higher elevation to low. Several water sources will be found near the private boundaries of Bald Mountain, including Cottonwood Lake, several small creeks, and a handful of natural springs. Elk in this region will begin rutting in September and will typically carry on for roughly a month, providing exciting hunting during archery season all the way through 1st rifle.
5-Day Hunt. By booking the first day of your adventure, you're automatically booked for the following 4 as well.
Reservation fees are due at the time of booking, and are non-refundable. 50% of the outdoorsman fee will process 2 weeks after the draw results in this state are posted. If you are unsuccessful in the draw, reach out to IO and the situation will be handled accordingly. The remaining 50% will process 1 month prior to the hunt.
Cancellations made prior to placing a deposit will be taken care of immediately. Any cancellations needing made after placing a deposit will result in attempts to reschedule the hunt for a different season, or a different year. Please note that refunds are not guaranteed.
If there is a lapse in availability, please do not be discouraged to reach out to IO. All calendars are set and managed by landowners, and unavailability is set by them. However, IO is willing to reach out on your behalf, to check on available dates. Other reasons for unavailable dates include biologist recommended hunter/harvest quotas that landowners implement, as well as state season dates not being released.
You are not legally allowed to access the property, for any adventure, prior to your selected access day. If you try to access the property at all before your selected date(s), without prior approval from IO, you will be subject to trespassing and punishments therein.
