1274Spencer Dam is located just east of Newcastle Wyoming in area 1. This particular section of the state is known for its phenomenal opportunities for turkey hunting, while taking in the views of the nearby Black Hills National Forrest. Spencer Dam consists of 1200+ acres of private land as well as direct access to an additional 6,000 acres of state and BLM land. This property is set up perfectly for chasing gobbles during the spring. Spencer Dam offers an area where different hunting tactics can be used, whether it be spot and stalk or calling them in. Access is very easy on this property coming from the south side, and on an established county road. Attending parties must be members of Infinite Outdoors to legally access this property. This is a DIY hunting opportunity. Blinds, and other likely turkey hunting gear will not be supplied for you so be sure to bring all things necessary.
Spencer Dam sits in an ideal location where the turkey population has been consistently great for years. The eastern side of Newcastle is surrounded by parts of the Black Hills National Forrest which means heavy timber and roosting trees everywhere. Turkeys can be seen more in abundance going to and from the roost during the early mornings and evenings. Often times, turkeys will use creek beds to travel. At the time of availability on this property, they will be in their mating season or strut. Gobbles can be heard more often and locating will tend to be easier.

I was told this property was “clutch” by an Infinite Outdoors staff member. Roost trees were in sparse pockets, there were people using the recreation area all over and making a considerable amount of noise, and there was no gobbling. No turkeys spotted at fly down time. I didn’t waste my time here and went back up into National Forest where I did hear turkeys and got to work some.

Sorry to hear this property didn’t meet your expectations! The small recreational area around the pond has been stated as a positive in the past by other hunters due to Turkeys becoming habituated to humans during the year and being easier to call in than in other region- but we fully understand how this could also be a hindrance (and will get the landowner to update the property for additional disclosures). While listening for gobbles as the sole method to locate turkeys can be an effective strategy at times, gobbles only carry a few hundred yard- less in trees or if in a canyon. That paired with nearing the end of the strut, turkey simply aren’t always gobbling. Again, sorry you were frustrated by the experience but we maintain that this property (largely due to tons of success of previous hunters) has great potential- particularly when a few miles are put on the boots. Thanks for leaving a review and helping improve the property and listing quality!

The birds were on fire! Put them to bed and doubled up the next morning.
