Notes from the landowner

Stratton Pheasant Lands is a compilation of over 8,000 acres, spread throughout Eastern Colorado. This is the equivalent to 12 full square miles of land! This property spans north to south, starting well north of Vona and heads south, clear across I-70 south of Stratton. These parcels of land will vary, and will consist of either CRP fields, ditch rows, and rotating crops. Rotated crops means that some years it will be corn, or wheat, or another form of agricultural use, and some years will be a rest year. This will be DIY wild bird hunting and will require high effort in order to be successful. A maximum of 3 parties will be allowed on this property in a single day, and no more than 4 hunters per group.

Game and habitat information

This area of eastern Colorado holds a healthy amount of wild pheasants. Over the years lots of eastern Colorado has seen a fluctuation in the pheasant population but now holds at a healthy number making this a great area to hunt birds. Due to the habitat of much of this area, birds are able to find cover in trees, thickly foliated ravines, and CRP fields. There is also great food and water supply through the significant agriculture in the area creating great properties to find pheasants.

SPEEDING

Drivers should stay under 15 MPH on private roads. Violators will be subject to fines starting at $100

Season

License

All hunters must possess a small game hunting license: https://cpw.state.co.us/thingstodo/Pages/SmallGame.aspx

Tough hunting conditions 60 degrees and a little wind. Did see some pheasants. Wheat stubble was great cover but the fields were huge. Tough to cover it effectively by myself

Tracks everywhere, dog was birdy, if you can't find birds on IO properties, you're doing it wrong.

Hey guys we spent the day exploring multiple pieces of this property. Put on 10 miles of boot leather and did come up with one bird. I would have to admit I was pretty disappointed in a couple things regarding this trip number one much of the property Is unsuitable for pheasant habitat and is truly just pasture land or super thin cover which will not hold any birds. The second disappointing thing is that the advertising for the property indicated the local farmers were seeing more birds than in the past we spoke with a couple of ranchers and Farmers, and Two game wardens that checked us and all indicated that they are far fewer birds and they have seen in many years. So that statement on the website feels a little disingenuous. I still love the idea of the program and getting on private properties but this one was certainly disappointing, especially since I invested for the entire year

Stratton pheasant land seemed generally poor as far as cover. Otherwise. It was like most other WIHA land in Colorado or Kansas.

I have 2 bird dogs and we hunted all day and saw no birds on any of the areas hunted. It is a large area so I was not able to hit everything but I did hit what I considered to be obvious areas that should have held birds

This is a difficult question, most of the day was pretty rough. Between over grown tree rows, unharvested fields and alot of not the right habitat made for ALOT of walking and driving no shooting lol. I spent more than half the day looking at and walking all the Stratton land I moved up to Vona about 3:00p.m to the fields out there. Much better habitat and actually managed to get into some birds 3:45 ish( unfortunately most where hens but did see 2/3 roosters) but by then it was the last 40 minutes of daylight and had to start my way back to the truck. Last year the pheasant properties seemed to be maintained better. But now I know where to start next time.
