0Just a mile outside of Salmon, Idaho, this 0.6-mile stretch of the Lemhi River offers a quiet, rural escape with the convenience of being near town. The property is easy to access, with a well-marked path leading to the river. While overhanging trees and brush line much of the bank, anglers will find ample space to fish and several obvious holding spots along the river. Wading is generally manageable, though some crossings may be mildly challenging depending on seasonal flows.
This is a peaceful, private setting where you're unlikely to encounter other anglers, although under Idaho’s Stream Access Law, the public may navigate the river below the high-water mark. Wildlife is abundant here and visitors often report sightings of deer, elk, moose, and a wide variety of birds. This stretch offers a great mix of seclusion and convenience, making it ideal for a day trip or a longer stay.

The Lemhi River is a productive spring-fed system and an underrated Idaho trout fishery. On this stretch, anglers can expect to target healthy Rainbow Trout that frequently reach 16 inches or more. In the right conditions, there’s even the chance of spotting sea-run Steelhead or Salmon making their way from the Upper Salmon River.
The river features rocky bends, aquatic vegetation, and clear runs where fish hold in both deep pockets and undercut banks. Water clarity can fluctuate due to nearby agricultural activity but typically remains fishable throughout the season. This is a highly versatile stretch that supports dry fly, nymph, and streamer fishing.
Seasonal Hatch Overview:
Early Spring: Midges and early mayflies get fish looking up.
Summer: Consistent mayfly and caddis hatches provide excellent dry fly opportunities.
Fall: Cooler temperatures and less pressure bring active fish and great streamer action.
A 4–6 wt rod is recommended, with a 9' 5 wt being a solid all-around choice for both dry fly work and heavier rigs. Whether you're picking apart seams with dries or swinging streamers through the bends, this peaceful stretch of the Lemhi offers a reliable and scenic place to cast a line.
